Two sanitation workers have died in Cantt area of Varanasi in UP. They went inside a tank in order to clean sewer pipeline. The two workers went inside the chamber at around 4 am.

According to Amar Ujala, there were three workers who went inside the chamber namely Chandan, Rajesh and Umesh. The wall of chamber slipped due to which they got stuck. Umesh was able to escape while other two died.

Varanasi is the Lok Sabha constituency from which India got its Prime Minister in 2014 who is Narendra Modi. This is the same Prime Minister who recently came in news for washing sanitation workers’ feet during his visit to Kumbh Mela. However, sanitation workers who are actually working as manual scavengers are dying in his own constituency.

Prime Minister’s gesture can be considered positive but the results don’t seem to be positive. The mere appreciation of workers will not solve their problems. Manual scavenging has become a big problem in India. According to a 2018 report, there are around more than 53 thousand manual scavengers in India. Another official data said that there is one manual scavenging death in every 5 days in India.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal flagged off 200 sewer machines in Delhi recently. Such machines can be a solution to the manual scavenging problem if they work aptly and implementation doesn’t remain faulty.
