CBI has been criticized for lacking autonomy and has been called as ‘caged parrot’ by the Supreme Court. The recent transfer CBI officer probing the case against former ICICI Bank chief Chanda Kochhar has raised the issue to the next level.

Actually, a CBI officer had lodged FIR against her in case of alleged irregularities related to sanctioning loans by ICICI Bank. The name of the officer is Sudhanshu Dhar Mishra who was transferred a day after filing FIR. He has been transferred to CBI’s Economic Offences Branch from Banking and Securities Fraud Cell. This has further raised questions on the working of CBI.

Prashant Bhushan tweeted, “CBI officer who filed FIR in the ICICI Bank Chanda Kochhar/Videocon Bank scam, was transferred out immediately after. Then Jaitley takes a swipe at CBI for naming other bank officials in the FIR. Obviously, govt wants to protect its cash cows in the banks!”

The case was registered against Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar. The case also had the name of Videocon chairman Venugopal Dhoot. The case was filed on Wednesday and the officer was transferred on Thursday. The opposition said that government is trying to interfere in working of CBI to help the accused.

Chanda Kochhar and her husband have been accused of irregularities in getting loans from Videocon with help firm of Deepak Kochhar. Chanda Kochhar had quit her post last year after there were allegations that she misused her post.

Now, the question arises – Is government really interfering in CBI affairs to save Chanda Kochhar? or The transfer of CBI officer is a mere co-incidence or a planned affair?
