Modi government presented much awaited Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on Rafale deal in Parliament on Wednesday. It has been claimed in the report that deal done during NDA rule is 2.86% cheaper than that done during UPA rule.

This report has rejected the claim that Modi government has brought Rafale jets at 9% cheaper rates. This claim was made by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha last month.

She said in Lok Sabha that during UPA rule price of aircraft was Rs 737 crore, while during NDA rule it was Rs 670 crore. This means NDA price became 9% cheaper and was better.

On the other hand, Law Minister Ravishankar Prasad said last year that in comparison to UPA govt present government has got deal of basic aircraft at 9% cheaper while that of advanced aircraft at 20% cheaper price. He claimed that new deal is better than previous one.

There is a conflict between CAG report and the claims made by Defence minister. Dhruv Rathee tweeted, “V.K. Singh (2017): New Rafale Deal is 40% cheaper Arun Jaitley (2018): New Rafale Deal is 20% cheaper Sitharaman (2018): New Rafale Deal is 9% cheaper CAG (2019): New Rafale Deal is 2.8% cheaper.”
