Rahul Gandhi is campaigning for his party Congress in Arunachal Pradesh for upcoming general elections. There he made several promises to people in order to get their support.

He said that if he comes to power then north-east status will be granted with special category status. He further said that he will never attack culture and tradition of Arunachal Pradesh and other North-Eastern states.

It is to note that the special category status comes with a lot of benefits. The states which are socially, economically and geographically weak get this status. It was given to Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Nagaland back in 1969. Such states don’t have to pay excise duty, customs duty, income tax etc. Also center has to look after 90% expenditure of such states on all centrally-sponsored schemes. Rest of 10% is given to the state as loan with 0% rate of interest.

Arunachal Pradesh will go for voting on 11th April. It has two constituencies for Parliament which are namely Arunachal West and Arunachal East. From west constituency it was BJP leader Kiren Rijiju who won and Ninong Ering of Congress won from East. Vote percentagae of Kiren Rijiju was 50.46%.

It is to see whether special category status is enough for Rahul Gandhi to woo voters in North-East states. After all the total of 25 seats that come from 8 North-East states. The issues related to these states are often missing from media as well political concerns.
