16 नवंबर को भारत में राष्ट्रीय प्रेस दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। इसकी शुरुआत 1966 से हुई। दरअसल चार जुलाई 1966 को भारत में प्रेस परिषद की स्थापना की गई थी।
इस परिषद ने अपना विधिवत कार्य 16 नंवबर 1966 से शुरू किया। और तब से ही 16 नवंबर को प्रतिवर्ष राष्ट्रीय प्रेस दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाने लगा।
आज राष्ट्रीय प्रेस दिवस के मौक पर तमाम राजनेता पत्रकारों को शुभकामनाएं दे रहे हैं। पश्चिम बंगाल की मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी ने ट्वीट किया है कि ‘राष्ट्रीय प्रेस दिवस के अवसर पर मैं सभी पत्रकारों को बधाई देती हूं। मीडिया लोकतंत्र का चौथा महत्वपूर्ण स्तंभ है और मीडिया को हमेशा सच की ही रिपोर्टिंग करनी चाहिए।’

प्रतिवर्ष प्रेस दिवस इस उम्मीद से मनाया जाता है कि पत्रकारों का ध्यान अपनी स्वतंत्रता एंव जिम्मेदारी की तरफ आकृष्ट हो सके। क्योंकि प्रेस परिषद की स्थापना मकसद ही था प्रेस की आजादी की रक्षा एंव पत्रकारिता में उच्च आदर्श कायम करना।
अब सवाल उठता है कि क्या मौजूदा वक्त में भारतीय मीडिया अपनी स्वतंत्रता एंव जिम्मेदारी के प्रति ईमानदार है ?
जवाब है- नहीं।
वैसे पत्रकारिता का कभी कोई स्वर्णयुग नहीं रहा लेकिन मौजूदा वक्त की स्थिति बताती है भारतीय मीडिया अपने मौलिक मूल्यों को भी कुचलने को उतारू है। ऐसे में स्वतंत्रता एंव जिम्मेदारी के प्रति ईमानदार की उम्मीद करना अपने आप में बेईमानी होगी।
