In the second phase of Lok Sabha elections (April 18), voting is in progress on three seats of West Bengal. These three seats are Jalpaiguri, Raiganj and Darjeeling.

CPI (M) candidate from Raiganj is Mohammad Salim. Election Commission claims that security arrangements are been kept in mind while conducting elections. But, the attack on Mohammed Salim’s convoy while he was going to cast his vote on Thursday morning raises questions on such claims.

Actually, Mohammed Salim’s vote falls in the Raiganj seat and he is also contesting from this constituency. When he was heading towards the polling booth to cast his vote, his convoy was attacked by a mob in Islampur. There is also a charge that the bullets were fired on the convoy.

After this incident, Mohammed Salim was taken to the party office. It is being told that he is now safe. Election Commission has asked the State Administration to report to it regarding the incident.

It is to note that Mohammed Saleem is also the current MP of Raiganj. Such an attack on the convoy of a Lok Sabha MP itself shows the lack of preparation and security for elections.

This elections also Mohamad Salim is contesting from Raiganj seat and is pitted against BJP’s Deboshri Chaudhary, Kanhaiya Lal Agrawal of TMC and Deepa Dasmunshi of Congress. In the previous elections, Mohammed Salim defeated Congress’s Deepa Dasmunsi with the margin of few votes.
